Note: Icon has put the apprenticeship program on hold, and will not be taking on any new apprentices
until further notice.

Icon Tattoo is an Oregon State Tattoo School. Our program, like our shop, is completely unique.
We offer a long-term, highly individualized curriculum, the aim of which is to produce highly trained,
professional tattoo artists. Our program is long—we ask a two-year commitment from
apprentices—and very small—we generally take on only two apprentices per year. As a result,
the course of each apprenticeship is determined by the needs of the individual student.

Our goal is that, upon leaving the shop, each apprentice is tattooing to the best of his or her ability,
and possesses a broad understanding of all aspects of the tattoo process. This includes design; color theory;
placement; drawing for tattoos; machine-building and electro-mechanics; small business administration
and finance; customer service; health, hygiene and safety; and the physical craft of tattooing: needle depth;
skin tension; and hand pressure. Tattooing is a difficult and all-consuming craft to learn. Out of the many
people who go through tattoo programs in Oregon, only a small number go on to have lucrative careers
as professional tattooers. Our goal is to do as much as possible to ensure that each of our apprentices
will be one of those who succeeds.

If you are interested in apprenticing, please contact Dustin or Melanie with any questions, or come by
the shop during our business hours to speak with us in person.

Please come with the following items:
• Resume (including two years’ work experience and professional and personal references)
• Portfolio (this does NOT have to be tattoo-related art. Drawings, paintings, or any other media
you work in can comprise your portfolio)
