Melanie Nead moved from Northern California to Portland in 1999 to attend
Lewis and Clark College. Upon graduating in 2003 with a degree in Literature
(ask her about it; she loves talking books), she began her apprenticeship at
Icon Tattoo. After a long, gradual, and friendly takeover, she is happy to be
the big boss at last. Melanie's favorite things (in no particular order) are: science,
language, mushrooms and hunting for mushrooms, beautiful things, minerals,
ghosts, plants, forests, hiking, boats, camping, trees, birds, insects, scary movies,
70's movies, burritos, jewelry, metalsmithing, museums (especially natural
history museums), handicrafts, and reading. The biggest influences on her
tattooing are scientific illustration, old lithography, fairy tales, and the architectural
designs of Alphonse Mucha and Antoni Gaudi, in which the borders between
2-d and 3-d design are blurred. She loves tattoos that fit a body so well that they
look like they belong nowhere else and on no one else. Melanie will give you a
very good deal on chicken-themed tattoos, and will happily talk to you about
her pet chickens all day. She thinks chickens are beautiful, hilarious, and
under-appreciated for their looks.
